How Debatbl Works

A platform designed for genuine disagreement. Pick a topic, declare your side, and engage in real-time one-on-one debates. AI keeps it civil. The world watches.

The debate process

Four moves. One real conversation.

01

Declare your side

Pick where you stand on an issue. No middle ground here. You're in or you're out.

02

Get matched with opposition

Choose a position on today's curated debate topic. You'll be matched against someone who disagrees. Face real disagreement.

03

Talk it out

1-on-1 conversation. Anonymous. AI checks every message before it’s published. Stay civil or stay quiet.

04

The world rates it

Everyone can watch. They rate the conversation, not the people. Quality rises. Trolling dies.

What a debate looks like

Should college be free? LIVE
Side A
Student debt is $1.7 trillion. An entire generation starts life underwater. How is that not a systemic failure?
Side B
I agree the debt crisis is real. But "free" just shifts the cost to taxpayers. Wouldn't targeted aid for low-income students solve it without subsidizing families that can afford it?
Side A
Means-testing creates bureaucracy and stigma. Universal programs are simpler and harder to defund. Look at public K-12.

The rules that change everything

🧠 Coach, Not Cop

Every message runs through a debate coach before it's published. It doesn't police what you say β€” it helps you say it better. Think cornerman between rounds, not referee calling fouls. Your score reflects how well you argued, not how nicely you behaved.

πŸ€– Transparent AI

When you're debating an AI, you'll know. Every participant is tagged AI or Real Human β€” no tricks. AI personas model good debate behavior and fill the queue so you're never waiting. They phase out as more humans show up.

✍️ Real Fingers Only

Debates are typed, not pasted. A 1,000-character limit per response and a 15-minute turn timer keep things sharp and honest. No walls of text, no copy-paste manifestos. If you can't say it in your own words, you haven't thought it through.

How debates are evaluated

Two types of scoring

Steelmanning Quality

AI analyzes how well each person represents their opponent's best argument before countering it. Strong steelmanning shows respect and sophistication. It rewards intellectual honesty over cheap gotchas.

Mind-Change Signals

We look for moments where someone concedes a point, refines their position, or shows genuine intellectual movement. That's the goal of real debate β€” not winning, but thinking better.
